Fire Walk With Me

This page is a weird mix of rantings and ravings, Music, graffiti, punk,Doctor Who, postpunk, comics, art, general silliness and GPOB (gratuitous pictures of Bowie). Sometimes I post about the 2012 US elections

Martina Topley-Bird — Black Steel

So I’ve been listening to Tricky all day and was compelled to search out this video for a couple reasons. First, I really love this cover. Not only does it genre-flip AND gender-flip (kind of? she sings it as the male character) the original Public Enemy track, it isolates the first verse of the song and kind of circles it obsessively, which has a fascinating effect. It leaves the narrator stranded in the prison cell and takes away the release of the “in the hour of chaos” part of the song, which makes this version a long, rolling boil with no relief.

Secondly, it illustrates why I’m reluctant to go see Tricky without Martina Topley-Bird. Tricky was a duo as far as I’m concerned.

Should I go see Tricky live? Is he good live?

THE BUZZCOCKS  -  EVER FALLEN IN LOVE

A universal message wrapped up in a three minute punk song sung entirely in a minor chord.  It’s melancholy, angry, and wistful, and Pete Shelley’s vocals are perfect. One of my all-time favorites - this is a great live performance.

I know I say it about all mountain goats songs, but this is a really good one.

ugh, this album!

I know right, it’s just unreasonably good.

And it’s absolutely ridiculous that he was 23 when he made this. 23!?! What? He sounds positively ancient.

Deltron 3030 - 3030

I played through Dr. Octagonecologyst and it lead me naturally to Deltron 3030 because the year 3000 (is the second Deltron album coming out or what?)

(my hiphop knowledge is pretty sparse and kind of random and like ten years behind and I have no excuse.)
