british film director and musician don letts, good friends of the likes of johnny rotten, bob marley and the clash, walks towards the police at the race riots of notting hill carnival 1976. the riots inspired joe strummer and paul simonon to write ‘white riot’, and this image was later used on the sleeve of black market clash.
Some of my readers that know me personally know of my obsession with the CLASH. The only band that matters. I collect their stuff above all others. Hell, even our dog is named Topper.
ANYWAYS.
Check out the awesome wall painting my lovely and talented wife did in our new bedroom!
Don Letts from the cover of the Black Market Clash EP. Original photo taken 1976 during the Notting Hill Gate riots, London.
Looks like he’s about to head into the bathroom.
Here’s a close-up:
That is super-cool.
Don Letts does not get enough love.
The album cover for Black Market Clash uses a real photo of Don Letts walking in front of a line of policemen at the 1976 Notting Hill Carnival riots (which was another riot set off by police brutality and racism)
Several members of The Clash were present and actively participating in the riots, possibly throwing bricks right along with the rioters. Joe Strummer wrote the song “White Riot” after this experience, to tell lower-class white youth that they should be rioting right alongside the black community, against police brutality and government oppression.
Today? The whole area is a super-gentrified playground for the rich, much like what most Americans think of when they hear “Notting Hill” (that Julia Roberts movie).
These are just things I’m thinking of today, reading about the current round of rioting in London.
