This page is a weird mix of rantings and ravings, Music, graffiti, punk,Doctor Who, postpunk, comics, art, general silliness and GPOB (gratuitous pictures of Bowie). Sometimes I post about the 2012 US elections, and I stan for Obama.

In response to Geeks according to TV: Yes, the Big Bang Theory geek characters are primarily male, however there is a 2:1 ratio of guy to girl geeks (more even than some of my physics classes,) so that's pretty realistic. Also, as a physics major from a family of scientists and scifi lovers, I find much of their humor relatable. I'm not trying to say BBT is better than Community, just that they accurately represent two different, but very real, kinds of geeks.

The guy/girl ratio thing: even if realistic, portraying it that way only reinforces the stereotypes that create a barrier to women in the sciences. Yes, there are probably more men than women in your physics classes, but why is that?

Isn’t it a cultural preconception that science and math are for boys? And that women are more attractive and sexually desirable when they aren’t smart?

That whole sheldon/other guy/Penny dynamic bugs me. Hot girl isn’t as smart as the guys so can’t relate to them very well and finds them strange. The geek guys aren’t as socially adept as the girl and require her help. Isn’t that a whole mess of stereotypes for the three main characters to have? And do they have no female friends that nobody is sleeping with? I’ve seen some geekish girls appear on that show, but they only show up as a love interest to one of the characters, not because they all have common interests and do the same things and it is in fact okay to interact with females for reasons other than sex.

It’s true that these are different types of geeks. I just don’t like the way BBT uses them.

Compare and contrast:

The Big Bang Theory uses its so-called “geek” characters as the butt of jokes, has only a superficial understanding of their personalities, and has a really, really limited range of pop culture reference points for the things they do and like. It’s pretty much the mainstream’s idea of what geek culture is. Also, although they include some tokens, geek is consistently coded as white and male. The humor is from the “normal” girl who isn’t as smart and is constantly baffled by their strange behavior.

Community’s Troy and Abed are not the butt of jokes - they have their own world of games and references and imaginings that is fun and funny and unique. The humor is watching their reactions to other people who just aren’t as awesome as they are. It’s geek culture’s idea of what geek culture is like. They have an almost bottomless level of pop culture references to actual things that actual geeks are into. And, obviously, they are both people of color - and while the geek characters are men, they don’t play off “normal” girl characters who aren’t smart enough to grasp their interests.

After watching Community I understand better why I can’t stand The Big Bang Theory.
