So Romneycare is working. Across the board. But perhaps, as Romney implies, there’s something that makes it unsuitable for the rest of the nation.
If that’s so, however, we’re not seeing it yet. Romneycare’s cousin, the Affordable Care Act — or, as it’s more frequently known, Obamacare — isn’t fully in place, and won’t be until 2014 at the earliest. But it has passed. And since it has passed, health-care spending has been dropping. Karen Davis, director of the Commonwealth Fund, writes that the most recent spending projections show a “$275 billion (5.6 percent) reduction for 2020, compared with pre-reform estimates. Moreover, that projection represents a cumulative reduction of $1.7 trillion over the 10 years from 2011 to 2020.”

Compare and contrast:
The Big Bang Theory uses its so-called “geek” characters as the butt of jokes, has only a superficial understanding of their personalities, and has a really, really limited range of pop culture reference points for the things they do and like. It’s pretty much the mainstream’s idea of what geek culture is. Also, although they include some tokens, geek is consistently coded as white and male. The humor is from the “normal” girl who isn’t as smart and is constantly baffled by their strange behavior.
Community’s Troy and Abed are not the butt of jokes - they have their own world of games and references and imaginings that is fun and funny and unique. The humor is watching their reactions to other people who just aren’t as awesome as they are. It’s geek culture’s idea of what geek culture is like. They have an almost bottomless level of pop culture references to actual things that actual geeks are into. And, obviously, they are both people of color - and while the geek characters are men, they don’t play off “normal” girl characters who aren’t smart enough to grasp their interests.
After watching Community I understand better why I can’t stand The Big Bang Theory.
^ I hate The Big Bang Theory. It’s the most obnoxious, one-dimensional portrayal of ‘geek culture’ I’ve ever seen. “Star...
AGREEMENT. Troy and Abed are AWESOME. they get on the group’s nerves sometimes, but they are having fun. Also, they have...
Sheldon is honestly the only character I can stand, but yeah, Community > Big Bang Theory for sure.
TBBT (though I really want to punch Howard in the face so fucking holy shit), but yeah, it’s not really what geek...
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. This post is magnificent.
And Community passes the Bechdel test. How long did it take for TBBT to get female characters other than Penny?
I’m not necessarily anti-TBBT. I enjoy it, and find it humorous- even hilarious -often enough. I do see where this post...
